Does my crawlspace need mold remediation?
Possibly. Shine a flashlight in the entrance and look all around. It should be dry after a rain and the wood should look new. It’s best to crawl in and look. Be sure to look in any area below washers and prior water leak areas.

Why can’t we just bleach the mold?
You can’t use bleach because the mold will return. Bleach will not reach the mold roots, which are embedded well. It does decolorize mold, but it won’t remove it. Bleach fumes are extremely bad for your lungs.

What caused this and can we prevent it in the future?
Your mold problem was caused by water or high humidity. The water leak (plumbing or rainwater intrusion) must be stopped and the humidity should be kept at or below 50%. Mold can start growing after 48 hrs of a water problem. The mold contamination may stay hidden within the walls, under the floor, or above the ceiling. After killing and removing all molded areas, a quality coating solution topical sealant is applied to help assure humidity won’t cause mold ever in the future.
